Google took dates and prices out of its EU hotel results. What a guesthouse does next.

Since 8 Sept 2026, searchers inside the European Union cannot filter Google's hotel results by date or see live prices, and the hotel unit has been replaced by a list of booking sites. This applies in Ireland and the euro area, not in the US or India. It is likely to shift free traffic toward commission-charging sites, unless you give people a reason to book direct.

The change, drawn for this article: the date picker and price tags faded out, and a plain list of booking sites where the hotel map used to sit. It is an illustration, not a screenshot of Google.

The short version

In the European Union, Google's hotel results no longer let people filter by date, see live prices or use tags like ‘budget’, and the hotel unit has been replaced by a list of comparison and booking sites. That applies to Ireland and the euro area, not the US or India. The likely effect is more clicks to commission-charging sites and fewer straight to you. Your answer is a complete Google listing with a working website link, a site that states rooms and prices plainly, and one clear reason to book direct.

If you run a guesthouse, a B&B or a small hotel in Ireland or the euro area, Google's search results changed under you on 8 Sept 2026 (Skift, 8 Sept 2026). Nothing on your side broke. What changed is how Google shows hotels to people searching from inside the European Union, and it changed to satisfy an EU law, the Digital Markets Act, not to help you.

This article is for that market only. If you are in the US or India, your hotel results look as they did, and you can skip this one. If you take bookings for rooms anywhere in Ireland or the euro area, read on.

In brief: the parts of Google's hotel results that used to send people straight to a hotel have been cut back, and a list of booking sites sits where they were. The sections below say what went, what it means for a place with a handful of rooms, and the things worth doing in the next fortnight.

Dates, prices and tags are gone from the EU results.

Since 8 Sept 2026, according to Skift, “users within the European Union can no longer filter by travel dates, check live pricing, or use descriptive tags like ‘budget’ or ‘boutique’ directly within the results” (Skift, 8 Sept 2026). The same report says the updates, “where relevant, will apply to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode”.

The hotel unit itself, the block with the map and the list of properties, has been replaced by a unit showing comparison and booking sites, alongside “an accompanying unit for direct suppliers”, which Google said “has also been restricted”. Direct suppliers means you: the hotel, the guesthouse, the B&B with its own website.

Holiday rentals went the same way. Google is “stripping its vacation rentals unit from its European search results page, although vacation rental feeds can still power results outside of the search unit on Google Maps and google.com/hotels”. Search Engine Roundtable reported the same change on the same day (Search Engine Roundtable, 8 Sept 2026).

Before 8 Sept 2026
Now, for searchers inside the EU

Pick travel dates and see a live price in the results

No date filter and no live price in the results

Tags such as ‘budget’ or ‘boutique’ to narrow the list

No descriptive tags

A hotel unit with a map and a list of properties

A unit listing comparison and booking sites

A block for hotels' own websites alongside it

Still there, but restricted

A vacation rentals unit on the results page

Removed from the results page

Fewer free clicks straight to you, more to the booking sites.

The effect is a shift in where the click goes. When a searcher could pick dates and see your price inside Google's own results, the next tap could be your website. Now the prominent block is a list of comparison and booking sites, and the block for hotels' own sites is smaller. People take the path in front of them.

Booking sites charge commission on each stay. That is the cost of this change for a small place: not lost bookings, necessarily, but the same bookings arriving through a channel that takes a cut. A guesthouse that used to get a fair share of its stays from a Google click to its own site may see that share shrink and the booking-site share grow.

This article gives no percentage for how much traffic moves, because there is not a verified one to give. Watch your own numbers instead: how many bookings come through your site and your phone each month, against how many come through each booking site, from September on. That record is worth more to you than any industry figure.

Give people a reason to book direct.

If more people are going to reach you through a booking site, the job is to make booking direct the obviously better choice once they have found you. That means a few things on your own site, visible before anyone scrolls.

  • A price. State the room rate per night, in euro, for the current season. A visitor comparing you with a booking site's page needs to see that the number is the same or better.
  • A perk for booking direct, such as breakfast included, a later checkout or free parking. Choose one that costs you less than the commission would.
  • A phone number and an email or WhatsApp contact, because many guesthouse bookings still start with a question.
  • A booking button that works on a phone and shows availability, so nobody has to go back to the booking site to check dates.

Try this now

Search for your own guesthouse by name from a phone, then from a laptop. Note what appears first: your site, your Google listing, or a booking site's page for you. Then open your own site and time how long it takes to find a price and a way to book. If it takes more than a moment, that is the week's job.

The bookings article covers what a booking page needs, and what to do if you would rather take bookings by phone and email than through software.

State rooms, prices and availability so a machine can quote them.

Skift notes that the same restrictions, “where relevant, will apply to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode” (Skift, 8 Sept 2026). Those are the written answers Google puts at the top of some searches. With less of your data in Google's own hotel unit, the plainest place for a search engine or an AI assistant to read your rooms and prices is your own website.

That means words on the page, not only a booking widget. A widget loads after the page and may say nothing to a crawler. Write a rooms page that says, in ordinary sentences, what rooms you have, what each costs per night in the current season, whether breakfast is included, and how far you are from the things people come for.

The AI Overviews article explains how those answers are built, and the AI answers piece covers the assistants that read the same pages. The advice in both comes down to the same thing: say it plainly, once, on a page that loads.

What to do in the next fortnight.

None of this needs a developer for the first pass. Most of it is checking what is already there and fixing what is wrong. Whoever built your site can add a rooms page or a booking button if there is not one.

  • The Website field on your Google Business Profile points to your own site, not to a booking-site page.
  • Your site shows a room price per night, in euro, on a page a search engine can read.
  • There is one clear perk for booking direct, stated next to the price.
  • A phone number and an email or WhatsApp contact are visible on every page.
  • The booking button works on a phone and shows availability.
  • Photos and hours on the Google listing are current, and reviews are being asked for a few at a time.
  • You have written down how many bookings came through your site, your phone and each booking site in September, so you can compare October against it.

Then leave it alone and watch. The change was made across the European Union at once, and its effect on a single guesthouse will show in the booking sources over a season, not a week.

A few common questions.

Does this apply to my B&B in Ireland?

Yes. Ireland is in the European Union, and the change applies to people searching from inside the EU. Guesthouses in the euro area are covered in the same way. If your guests mostly search from the US, their results have not changed.

Has my Google Business Profile changed?

Not as far as the reported change goes. It affects the hotel unit in search results, the block with dates, prices and a map. Your ordinary listing, with photos, reviews and the Website button, is a separate thing, and it is now the main free way for a searcher to reach your own site.

Should I leave the booking sites?

No. They still bring guests, and this change is likely to send them more. The aim is to make direct booking the better choice for anyone who has already found you: a plain price, a small perk, and a phone number.

Will the AI answers still mention my guesthouse?

They can. Skift reports that the same restrictions apply to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode where relevant, which makes what your own website says in plain text more important, not less. A rooms page with prices and availability written as sentences gives those answers something to quote.

Why did Google do this?

To comply with the Digital Markets Act, an EU law about how large platforms treat rival services. The details of the law are outside this article. What matters for you is the result: fewer hotel details in Google's own results, and a list of booking and comparison sites in their place.
